Destination Thursday: Track a Turtle at Maurice K. Goddard State Park

Named for a man who greatly expanded the Pennsylvania state park system, Maurice K. Goddard State Park in Mercer County features the 1,860-acre Lake Wilhelm. Besides the water sports like fishing and boating, M. K. Goddard is a great park for watching wildlife. The large lake, abundant wetlands, old fields and mature forests provide a diversity of habitats that attract wildlife in all seasons. On a trip here you might see bald eagle, osprey, loons, teal, mergansers, woodcocks and many species of warblers. Turtles abound by the marina.

For information on biking, boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, picnicking, wildlife watching and directions, go to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website. Also, remember that all Pennsylvania state parks are identified on the official state highway map.
