Destination Thursday: Come on Everybody, Do the Hoodlebug Trail

Located in Indiana County, the Hoodlebug Trail follows the Indiana Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It passes through six miles of residential, commercial, and natural settings between Homer City and Indiana. The trail is open year-round to non-motorized activities.

The Indiana Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, built in the 1850s, was the first railroad constructed in Indiana County. It was built on part of the Catawba Path, a Native American trail that extended from the Carolinas to upstate New York.

When the trail was opened in 1999, a contest was held to name the trail. Hoodlebug, the local name given to a self-propelled passenger coach that used the rail line until 1940, was selected.
