Destination Thursday: Fort Necessity - National Battlefield Fort Necessity National Battlefield is located in the mountains of southwestern Pennsylvania, about 11 miles east of Uniontown, on State Route 40. The park comprises approximately 900 acres in three separate sites. The main property contains the visitor center, the battlefield with the reconstructed Fort Necessity, and the Mount Washington Tavern. The Braddock Grave unit is approximately 1.5 miles west of the main unit, and the Jumonville Glen unit is approximately seven miles northwest of the main unit. WPC biologists have worked on several projects to describe the flora, fauna and habitats of these public lands so the National Park Service can include these resources in their management plans. There is a picnic area and hiking trails at the main site. The trails range from 15 minutes to 90 minutes, and traverse a wide spectrum of natural and historical settings. You can access instructions and a map on the Fort Necessity National Battlefield website. 250th Anniversary, July 3, 1754 - July 3 & 4, 2004 Fort Necessity National Battlefield will be the site of the 250th anniversary commemoration of the French & Indian War's beginning. In the coming years, exciting events and programs are planned at Fort Necessity and other French & Indian War sites in the region. For more information, go to www.nps.gov/fone/250/.
