Planting More Than Flowers Just one look at the face of this young man, who volunteered last weekend to plant the Homer Street and Walz Avenue Community Garden in the North Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh, shows that we are planting more than flowers with every garden. The satisfaction of working with friends, family and neighbors to beautify a familiar corner of the city or town or region cannot be measured, and the joy of getting hands into dirt is evident from the broad smile. Those people who join the volunteer "cultivators" experience the pleasure of physical work; the sensations of being outdoors in spring sun, wind and (sometimes) rain; and a personal connection to our natural environment. The Conservancy's community gardens, located in 170 communities in 20 counties, offer a rare chance for people to experience working alongside others of all ages and backgrounds for the common goal of beautifying our communities. While we learn about gardening, we also cultivate friendships; and, best of all, we can get our hands dirty on purpose! Photo by WPC's Jack Rowley. Tour our more than 170 Community Gardens.
