Fallingwater Friday: What's Blooming at Bear Run in May? Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is a large evergreen shrub with showy clusters of pink buds and pink and white flowers on sticky stalks. It blooms late May to late June in many Pennsylvania counties and at the Bear Run Nature Reserve and Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pa. It is often at peak bloom near June 10th. Mountain laurel is frequently used in ornamental plantings. Mountain Laurel, Pennsylvania's state flower, is somewhat shade-tolerant and can be planted in open woods, where it lends an evergreen touch in winter and showy flowers in late spring. You can enjoy mountain laurel's beauty by taking a hike on a variety of trails on the Bear Run Nature Reserve, including Arbutus and Rhododendron Trails, where the Mountain laurel grows in abundance. The reserve has more than twenty miles of hiking trails and several rustic camping sites that are open to the public at no charge.
