Predacious diving beetles (Insect Order: Coleoptera, Family: Dytiscidae) are some of the primary predators in vernal pools. Vernal pools are small, isolated wetlands that often completely dry up periodically. Predacious diving beetles feed on fairy shrimp, other insects and even tadpole larvae. Their large mandibles are very strong and can leave a painful bite. They can secrete a distasteful chemical to ward off birds and other animals that might try and eat them.
