Appearing as an often-unexpected detail on the tour of Fallingwater is the Herb Garden on the Third Floor Terrace. It is one of a number of planters throughout the house that border, connect, and unite interior and exterior space.
This planter served as an excellent design solution, making use of a sunlit, waist-level surface created by a need for natural light in the second-floor Guest Bathroom below it. The bathroom ceiling rises high enough to allow for clerestory windows, the orientation of which allows natural, morning light to infuse the space, while at the same time accommodating ventilation requirements and affording a degree of privacy.
Every year, WPC volunteers plant and maintain the Herb Garden. If you are interested in learning more about Fallingwater volunteer opportunities, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Ann Turnicky at aturnicky@paconserve.org.
