Destination Thursday: Crooked Creek Lake and The Environmental Learning Center
Crooked Creek Lake is located in Armstrong County, seven miles south of Kittanning on US 66. Authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1936, the dam was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. It is a part of the flood control system for the Allegheny and Upper Ohio Rivers. The Crooked Creek Dam is a rolled earth fill dam with an impervious core. The embankment rises 143 feet above the streambed, has a top length of 1,480 feet and a base width of approximately 1,080 feet. For a list of recreational activities and a vicinity map, go to www.lrp.usace.mil/rec/lakes/crookedc/htm.
Crooked Creek Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is located on 31 acres of meadowland and forests at Crooked Creek Lake. The center offers a private, rustic atmosphere for retreats, trainings and periodic meetings. An herb garden, interpretive trail and a mounted animal collection are on hand. The ELC was originally constructed and managed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. In 2001, the center was leased to the Armstrong Education Trust, who manages the facility.
There will be an open house at the Center this Saturday, May 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. For directions and additional information, please call 724-763-6316.
