National Volunteer Week - Meet The National Civilian Community Corps

After a competitive application process, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy was the first organization in our region to be awarded an Americorps NCCC team. Americorps NCCC is a national service program for young adults modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s. Working teams of 10 to 12 members travel across the United States to perform community service with focus on issue areas including unmet community needs, environment, education and public safety. Western Pennsylvania Conservancy was granted a team for six weeks at Bear Run Nature Reserve located in Fayette County. The Bear Run Americorps team will live and work at the reserve through the end of April. They will spend their time improving the twenty miles of hiking trails, painting property boundaries, installing trail interpretation signs and completing nature journal entries. The team members will each submit a journal entry and photograph to WPC. Stay tuned for some interesting perspectives on Bear Run in upcoming WPC Dailies.

Today's photo is of the Bear Run Nature Reserve Americorps team. Western Pennsylvania Conservancy Curator of Education, Sarah Cleary, took the photograph when the team arrived. The team members are back row, left to right: Jenn Quan (CA), Tyler Faulstich (WA), Renee Carrier (OR), Emily Hershey (PA), Chip Boyes (SC), and Kelly Williams (TX); and front row, left to right: Martha Pondsack (WI), Hilary Thibodeau (ME), Brittany Stiffler (KS).
