Green Thumb Tuesday: Growth OpportunitiesNext week is National Volunteer Week. All over the country, people are stepping up to lend a hand to thousands of volunteer projects that will meet a need in their communities. Opportunities range from Earth Day celebrations and community clean-up efforts, to beautification efforts such as the signature community gardens planted by Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's Community Conservation Program. With the help of 5,000 volunteers in 20 counties, the Community Conservation Program plants garden sites in more than 170 communties across the region. The volunteers range from age 8 to 80, from expert gardeners to the novice; they come from all backgrounds and types of experience. Sometimes whole families come out together. The gardens give people an opportunity to meet their neighbors, or sometimes complete strangers who share their desire to beautify a corner of the community. Thanks to these volunteers, millions of people walk or drive by gorgeous garden sites every day all through the growing season. The gardens show that people care enough to invest their time to make the community more beautiful. View our garden planting schedule for this year. E-mail Today's WPC Daily to a Friend!
