Annual salvia, also known as sage, comes in a wide variety of colors. Originally, it was only available in red, but colors such as burgundy, white, pink and purple are now available. Salvia is a very versatile plant that will grow in full sun or partial shade and does not require a lot of water. Most varieties grow about 12 inchs tall, some will grow as high as 22 inches. Salvia is a large genus in the mint family, with about 700 species that include many ornamentals, as well as the culinary herb, sage. It is unrelated to the sage brush of the west, which is commonly used by Native Americans for medicinal and spiritual purposes. Deadheading, or removing the dieing flower spikes 2 or 3 times a year will insure that the flowers remain full and vibrant throughout the growing season. Salvia Victoria White is a favorite of many gardeners and can be seen in several WPC community flowerbeds in Western Pennsylvania. Take a virtual tour of our gardens.
