Destination Thursday: The North Country Trail The North Country National Scenic Trail is a premier footpath that one day will stretch more than 4,000 miles to link communities and wilderness areas across seven northern states. Already, more than 1,700 miles have been completed! You can view a map that shows the projected trail in its entirety at http://www.northcountrytrail.org/. When completed it will be the longest hiking trail in the United States. The mission of the North Country Trail Association is to develop, maintain, preserve and promote the North Country National Scenic Trail through a national network of volunteers, chapters, partner organizations and government agencies. The Association achieves its mission by creating, encouraging and supporting programs of public education, membership services, recreational opportunities and resource and corridor protection. In Pennsylvania, there are 104 miles of the first largely completed segment. The initial 95 miles of the North Country Trail meanders through the rolling hills and stream valleys of the Allegheny National Forest. Marked with white paint blazes and routed wooden signs, this northwestern Pennsylvania trail is one of the more established along the route of the NCT. There are 11 continuous miles of new trail in the Game Lands of Butler County near West Sunbury, and 3 miles of new trail in the Game Lands near Parker. Both of these sections have some wonderful bridges. Pictured today is a 24-foot bridge and the work crew that installed it. There are also two 48-foot wooden bridges, as well as many smaller ones in this area.
