This view of the guest house under construction in winter, 1939, was taken by lifelong Mill Run resident Gene Work, who as a young man took a job at nearby Bear Run. This image and many others will be a featured part of our upcoming exhibit on the community's connection to Fallingwater, "A Fallingwater Homecoming." Gene explains his connection: I was a farm boy. I used to deliver corn, green beans, and eggs and stuff like that from the farm out to Kaufmann's camp. When I was just out of high school, I worked on the guest house. We started out as laborers digging, shoveling, wheelbarrow, and all that. Then when it came to laying stone, the foreman said, "You fellows can lay stone too." So we did masonry work, and cement work, and all that. We did everything . Now retired from Anchor Hocking, Gene still lays stone and block, and does carpentry work. "A Fallingwater Homecoming" will open at the Barn at Fallingwater in April, 2004. This project has been supported in part by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, the Federal-State Partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
