The primary goal for fall gardening is putting the garden to bed for the winter. The only real difference in spring gardening as opposed to fall gardening is the cut-off point for activities. The spring activities are ended by the heat, whereas the fall activities are ended by the cold. Bundling in a warm jacket and gloves will allow for the proper finish to the gardening season.
There are six basic guidelines that need to be kept in mind when putting a garden to bed:
1. Remove any remaining weeds
2. Surround perennials with a generous supply of compost
3. Cut back dead flowers and stems but not all the way to ground level since some stubble attracts snow cover for insulation
4. Transplant and divide perennials
5. Plant spring bulbs
6. Mow the grass to prevent snow mould, mice, voles or moles.
