It's inevitable during western Pennsylvania's cold and snowy winters that our thermostats go up. But home heating is not the only source of increased energy consumption during winter. We also use more electricity to light our homes as the days darken earlier, and our cars burn more gas when the weather is colder.
As the snow starts to fall, consider these energy-conserving options:
Turn off the lights in unoccupied rooms.
When you are going to be away from home for several hours or more, lower your thermostat.
Winterize the windows in your home by caulking around drafty areas and adhering reflective film to the windows to prevent heat loss.
Hang insulated draperies on your windows. (They will not only help to keep your home warm in winter, but also cool in summer.)
Have your heating system checked to ensure operating correctly and at maximum efficiency.
