Loyalhanna Creek, located in Westmoreland County, is a good, little trout fishery not far from Pittsburgh. This creek is a great place to visit if you want to get away and enjoy the day fishing, and also offers anglers a Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only (DHALO) section. The DHALO section runs for 1.5 miles, from SR 711 downstream to SR 2045. For more information and directions, go to flyfishingconnection.com.
Loyalhanna Creek is receiving stream for the entire Loyalhanna Watershed, and flows from its headwaters near Donegal northward through the towns of Ligonier, Latrobe, and New Alexandria to its confluence with the Conemaugh River in Saltsburg. It is here that Loyalhanna Creek and the Conemaugh River combine to form the Kiskiminetas River. Through it's travels, Loyalhanna Creek is home to an array of species and features some of the areas most breathtaking views. Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's Watershed Assistance Center, in partnership with the Loyalhanna Watershed Association, is in the process of completing a watershed assessment on the Loyalhanna Watershed. A watershed assessment is a comprehensive look at the impacts to and attributes of the watershed.
Over the past year, WPC staff have walked, driven and, in some cases, floated along over 2,000 miles of stream in the watershed. Through this experience, WPC staff and volunteers have gained valuable experience and vivid memories of this extraordinary watershed. WPC and the Loyalhanna Watershed Association are in the process of compiling a comprehensive restoration plan that is based on the information collected from the watershed assessment. This plan will prioritize and help to address some of the watershed's many challenges.
