November 11, 2004 Veterans Day and Destination Thursday
Come Celebrate GIS Day at WPC, November 17th
Every place in the world has a latitude/longitude coordinate; be it a street address, a watershed, a climatic zone, or an island seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Geographic information systems (GIS) software is the ideal tool for finding the patterns and relationships in location-based information. It allows our spatial information to be dynamic, up-to-date, and easily distributed.
On Wednesday, November 17th, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) will present GIS Day. The event will offer schools, businesses and the general public an opportunity to get a glimpse into the real world applications of this fascinating technology. At the Conservancy, GIS is a part of everyday life, with applications that include:
mapping new species' locations
researching property offerings
selecting areas of focus for our forestry initiative
producing reports from our research projects
creating garden and trail maps, and much more.
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is located downtown at 209 Fourth Avenue, across from PPG plaza. There will be a multi-media gallery of maps and presentations created at WPC and elsewhere. GIS staff will be on hand to guide and answer questions between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
