Hike and Bike in the Laurel Highlands -- But Wear Your Autumn Colors for Safety

Starting in October, outdoor enthusiasts should be extra careful on their way outdoors. Besides the possibilities for rapidly changing weather, Pennsylvania hosts more than one million licensed hunters and hunting seasons begin with the changing of the leaves. As you may know, Pennsylvania's archery season began on October 2nd, and small game season starts shortly after. This year, the majority of Pennsylvania's gun seasons begins October 16th and will run through the second week of December. So as you head outdoors for your adventure, be sure to pack an orange vest so that your experience is safe and full of great memories.

With cool temperatures, leaves changing color and that special smell in the air, there is no better time than fall to be outdoors. Whether you hike, bike or enjoy a leisurely stroll along a country road, Pennsylvania seems to have endless possibilities for outdoor enthusiasts. Some of the most spectacular views occur every October and November in the Commonwealth. Wildlife movement is at its yearly peak as migrating birds move through the region, local wildlife prepares for winter and some of the more popular game species begin their mating seasons.

For Hikers and Bikers

Youghiogheny River Trail (walking/biking)
Great fall scenery and easy family-friendly walking and biking in the Laurel Highlands section of this 70 mile railroad bed trail (
from McKeesport to Confluence). Multiple access points and four camping sites along the trail make it easy to plan a trip, either short or long. Horse-back riding is allowed on the northern section of the trail only - from Connellsville to Boston, Pa.. The section of the trail which runs through Ohiopyle State Park is especially beautiful.

Roaring Run Ramble (mountain biking)
For mountain bike enthusiasts, this trail in the Laurel Highlands region, Somerset County, offers some of the best singletrack and beautiful fall scenery in Pennsylvania. If you're looking for a slightly easier ride, the 3-mile North Woods Ramble offers excellent views of the mountains of western Pennsylvania.
