A Neighborly Place: Buttermilk Falls, Indiana County
This Indiana County park features a 45 -foot waterfall and a scenic 48-acre woodland with a hiking trial. The natural area was donated to the Indiana County Parks in 1995 by Keystone-Conemaugh Group. The site has been set aside to protect both typical and unique plant and animal communities and to protect outstanding examples of natural beauty. Waterfalls, which are uncommon in Pennsylvania, are formed when a stream wears away an erodible layer of rock until it encounters a resistant layer, which erodes at a slower rate.
Between 1931 and 1956 the property was owned by Fred McFeely, grandfather of Fred Rogers, the creator of public television's "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood." The site became the family's retreat; and Mr. Rogers often visited here as a child.
