Naturally Creepy Places Week - A Cave in Central Pennsylvania
It takes 100 years for some cave stalactites to grow 1 inch!
Pictured above is a cave preserve, located in a limestone-rich area in west-central Pennsylvania. In order to protect this area, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy purchased the property in 1985 and sold the 6.8 acres to the National Speleological Society in December of 1997. The cave is primarily used for research and education today. It is one of the most significant caves in the state. The "soda straw" stalactites pictured here are some of the longest in the world, but have only been seen by a handful of scuba-divers who braved water-filled passages to visit these isolated rooms of the cave.
At the request of the present owner, we are being intentionally vague about the location of this cave in order to protect both the unique collection of stalactities and also not to encourage amatuer scuba divers to risk their lives trying to get to them.
