Tectonic plate movement helped to form the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania. Ages ago, Africa's plate collided with that of North America and shoved the earth's crust upward forming mountains. Some areas were affected more than others. For instance, central Pennsylvania is known for its “folded” mountains where geologic forces were so significant they caused rock formations to be thrusted upwards.
Some of these rock formations can be seen easily at road cuts along the Pennsylvania Turnpike east of Bedford. Viewing them now, it's hard to imagine that rock formations, which now are oriented nearly vertical, were once in a horizontal plane.
Today's photo shows near-vertical rock layers visible along Pennsylvania Turnpike east of Bedford.
