The Kaufmanns had barely begun to use Fallingwater the month before when all at once, in January 1938, it captivated the public at large. In that month it appeared on the cover of Time magazine; Wright featured it in The Architectural Forum, in an issue he designed and wrote; and the Museum of Modern Art showcased it in an exhibition devoted entirely to Fallingwater. Meanwhile, back at Bear Run, Edgar Kaufmann Sr. was eager to add a servants' wing and guest house, and in January, 1938, contacted Wright to begin the project. Wright's first drawings appeared in May, but Kaufmann had to wait almost a year before construction actually began. Longtime WPC employee Earl Friend had his start at Fallingwater right then: as a teenager, quarrying the stone that would become the floors and walls of the guest house and servant's quarters you see here.Pictured today is a recent photo of Fallingwater's guest house as it looks in winter from outside its bedroom window. The photo is by Robert Ruschak. You can hear Earl Friend's thoughts and memories of his early days at Fallingwater. |
