The Paper Birch Tree Today's photo was taken by WPC Volunteer John Karian along the wetlands of French Creek. The Paper Birch tree ( Betula papyrifera ) can grow to 50-70 feet and grows on moist upland soils and slopes. It ranges through much of northcentral and northeastern Pennsylvania, moving south along the Appalachian Mountains. As a fast growing “pioneer” tree, it often can be found in areas where timber has been cut or land cleared, often in nearly pure stands. Native Americans made their lightweight bark canoes by stretching the stripped bark over frames of cedar, sewing it with thread from Tamarack roots, and caulking the seams with pine resin.Reference: Eastern Forest" - The Audubon Nature Guide E-mail Today's WPC Daily to a Friend!
