Destination Thursday: Cross-Country Skiing at Laurel Ridge State Park There is a certain peace and tranquility in western Pennsylvania during the winter, and the views from our protected areas can be breathtaking. Cross-country skiing is a great way to experience winter, especially when there is lots of snow on the ground. In addition to the obvious fitness benefits, cross country skiing is an excellent way to observe nature. The Laurel Ridge State Park in Cambria, Fayette, Westmoreland, and Somerset Counties offers about 35 miles of trails for cross-country skiing. The park stretches along the Laurel Mountain from the Picturesque Yougiogheny River at Ohiopyle to the Conemaugh Gorge near Johnstown. This large park spans five counties. The Pa. Department of Conservation and Natural Resource (DCNR) advises you begin your trip by checking with the park office in Rockwood, Somerset County (click for driving directions), to see which sections are suitable for skiing. A free map is available from the park office. There is also a 20-mile cross-country ski touring concession adjacent to the Route 653 parking area. A fee is required on this trail. You can view present conditions and snow depth at the park on their live Web cam. Today's photo was taken by WPC member and volunteer Mary Shaw during a recent cross-country skiing trip at Laurel Ridge State Park. For more information visit the DCNR site.
