Welcome to Year Two of WPC Daily!
A message from Western Pennsylvania Conservancy President and CEO Larry Schweiger

On New Year's Day of last year we began e-mailing daily photos and brief facts which we hope highlighted the beauty and joy that can be found in our western Pennsylvania backyards.

If you were among the eighty subscribers who received our first WPC Daily, thank you for staying with us. We hope you enjoyed picking up little nuggets of information such as: that prehistoric man used Lake Pleasant as a refrigerator to store a butchered wooly mammoth; or that 20,000 bats fly out of an abandoned church outside of Altoona every summer evening exactly as dusk. You were the first to see images of Fallingwater frozen for the first time in nine years this past January; and you saw some beautiful shots of a female peregrine hatched at Pitt last year, who is now nesting under Niagara Falls.

Our daily subscribers today total more than 1,000 and we continue to grow. Our new features, Destination Thursday and Green Thumb Tuesday hopefully provide information that is of value to you. We welcome your opinion on the direction we take in the coming year.

WPC's mission is saving the places we care about by connecting people to the natural world. You can help us succeed in our mission by encouraging your friends and family to subscribe to WPC Daily. We believe once a person comes to appreciate the unique natural wonders around them, he or she is more likely to want to protect those surroundings. WPC Daily exists solely to achieve that goal. With your help and guidance, we will succeed.

I took today's photo at sunrise on the snow covered hills of South Mountain, in Franklin County, on New Year's Day 1984.
