Afternoon Hike- Wolf's Run Vista

The 50,000 acres of rolling mountains, vast woodlands and pristine waterways of Forbes State Forest provide many recreational activities for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. This is a prime area of near-wilderness in sourthwestern Pennsylvania for hiking, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. One of the many highlights of this great state park, regardless of the time of year, is the Wolf Rocks Trail leading to Wolf Rocks Vista.

The Wolf Rocks trailhead is located at the picnic area and parking lot on Laurel Summit. The 2.7-mile trail is an intermediate level hike along a rocky trail with transitioning landscape until the end is reached at Wolf Rocks Vista. The scenery at the beginning part of the trail is primarily mature forest of various maple species, red oak, and black cherry. Then, the vegetation shifts to a mix of rhododendron, mountain laurel, and hemlock. The greenery of this section of the trail is especially pleasing in the winter months when the vegetation is accented and contrasted with the purity and whiteness of a fresh snowfall. About halfway through the hike, outdoor adventurers are delighted by the presence of a bog-like area out beyond the immediate tree line. The last part of the trail is a mix of hardwoods with white pine and rhododendron interspersed throughout the landscape. As you approach the vista, the tree line opens up to a rocky cliff overlooking Linn Run Valley and Laurel Mountain—a sight bound to delight all ages. The foliage from this overlook is especially spectacular during the fall months when the leaves begin to change colors. In addition, the boulders at the overlook provide a natural observation point to enjoy the view or just to relax while eating a snack with friends.
