If you would like a splash of red, white and blue this Fourth of July weekend, drive or walk by one of these community gardens sponsored by Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's Community Conservation Program:
I-79 North rest area at Grove City
13th Street and Otter Street, Franklin
Riverview Park, North Side, Pittsburgh
Highland Park Bridge, southbound, Pittsburgh
Ivory Avenue and Evergreen Avenue, North View, Pittsburgh
7th Street Extension and Forester Street, Harrisburg
These and some 150 other gardens were planted this spring by 5,000 volunteers from pre-schoolers to octogenarians. Working in highly variable conditions ranging from drenching rain to hot sun, from chilly and cloudy days to perfect spring mornings, neighbors, friends, families, businesses, corporate employees and civic organizations all pitched in to get the flowers into the ground. Watch the colors glow on the Fourth and let the flowers remind you that people throughout our region care enough about their communities to invest their own time and energy into making the landscape more beautiful.
Today's photo was taken in 2004 at the Carson and Sarah Street Garden on Pittsburgh's South Side.
