One way to increase a child's awareness and curiosity about the natural world is to provide them with opportunities to experience it. This can be especially true for nature's watery worlds, which are both mysterious and intriguing. Water holds a special attraction for humans and angling for fish is one way to experience it -- even for a child.
There is a place in the southeastern corner of Indiana County were a day is set aside for children to fish. This day is an annual event known as Kids Fish for Fun Day, or more simply, Kid's Day. Children from the communities throughout the Blackleggs and surrounding watersheds are brought to the pond at Young Township Park and are provided with the opportunity to fish for trout. The mix of rainbow, palomino and brook trout stocked into the pond prior to the day's event are bound to be hungry, delighting the kids throughout the morning by snacking on their bait. The young anglers are rewarded with not only the satisfaction of catching a fish or two, but also with prizes, a
t-shirt and lunch.
This year's Kid's Day is on Saturday, May 7th, from 9 a.m. to Noon, when kids age 12 and under are able to fish for free. Their adult companions, however, are required to wait until after the kid-designated hours, and must have a valid Pennsylvania fishing license. Hosted by the Blackleggs Trout Nursery and Watershed Association, the organization's members enjoy a full day volunteering at this event, handing out welcome packages, cooking lunch and announcing winners of various fishing challenges.
Young Township Park is located on Park Drive just north of Clarksburg, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. For more information about Blackleggs Kids Fish for Fun Day, visit www.blackleggs.org.
