A Weekend of Bat Viewing and Hiking at Canoe Creek State Park
Saturday, May 28; 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Kick off the summer for the first walk to the bat sanctuary at the old church in Canoe Creek State Park. Settle in to watch the bats emerge from the bat church for a night of foraging. Meet at Pavilion #1 (across from cabin road) to walk to the bat sanctuary. Bring a blanket to sit on and flashlight for the return walk.
Two of the photographs above show the bats at the vacant church where they spend the summer, and the third shows a hibernating bat in a cave. A few years ago, WPC purchased land adjacent to the church to protect it from future development.
Sunday, May 29; 3:30 - 5 p.m.
Take a hike to the old limestone mine to see where the bats of Canoe Creek hibernate in winter. This is a one-mile, uphill hike; wear sneakers/hiking shoes and bring water. The hike leaves from the Education Center.
