This weekend, April 23-24, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Cook Forest State Park, in conjunction with the Eastern Native Tree Society (ENTS), will host a two-day series of free events open to the public focusing on the old growth forests of Cook Forest and the Eastern United States.
Join forest scientists and naturalists for this two-day event as they demonstrate the latest and most accurate methods to measure tall noteworthy trees and delineate old growth forests. Events during this two-day period will explore the Park`s biodiversity, aesthetics, natural and human history, and its importance as a National Natural Landmark. For more details, see the DCNR website event list; or, contact Dale J. Luthringer at (814) 744-8407, or email cookforestsp@state.pa.us.
Another important ecological aspect of the region along the Clarion River goes beyond big trees. To adequately conserve and sustainably manage forest ecosystems into the future it is important that large expanses of intact forests exist. SInce the 1970s, WPC has endeavored to protect forests along the river by adding forested land to Cook Forest State Park and the adjacent Clear Creek State Forest.
