Bring Some Color to Your Corner of the World

April showers may bring May flowers, but for Western Pennsylvania Conservancy there's another important feature to April: It's National Volunteer Month. Without the thousands of volunteers who come out to help plant over 150 community garden sites, it would be impossible to put in the 300,000 annual flowers that make these gardens such visible community landmarks.

Thanks to school groups of all ages and their teachers, Rotary club members, employees of numerous businesses and corporations in the region, scouts, church groups, garden clubs, community development organizations, neighborhood block watches, and all sorts of other individuals and groups, WPC is able to sponsor these sites year after year. Planting day can be a great family activity or a wonderful opportunity for organizations to contribute to the vitality of their communities. Two gardens have even been designated as “Working Hearts” sites to encourage physical activity for heart health.

To get in on the fun, use WPC's website in April to sign up for a May planting. Visit www.paconserve.org and click on the “growing communities” section to get more details about the specific garden sites and planting dates. You can sign up right on the web, or contact our Volunteer Coordinator directly at 412-586-2324 or cfarber@paconserve.org .
