A wooded hilltop in Raccoon Creek State Park (Beaver County) was once the site of a busy health spa. During the 1800s, as many as 200 guests at a time visited Frankfort Mineral Springs to socialize, enjoy the scenery, and partake of what were purported to be naturally medicinal waters. Although few traces of the resort's buildings remain, the once famous mineral-laden waters continue to flow from the sidewall of a sandstone-and-shale grotto located at the head of a narrow ravine. The broad footpaths leading to this location afford a pleasant walk during all seasons of the year. As shown in today's photo from the WPC Resource Conservation archives, spectacular ice formations may be seen at the Frankfort Mineral Springs in the winter.
Other winter activities at Raccoon Creek state Park include ice fishing, ice skating (on the lake) and sledding. There are various wintertime special events. Designated roads and trails are open for cross-country skiing. For more information, call
