Western Pennsylvania Conservancy was founded in 1932 and since then has grown
from a group of conservation-minded philanthropists and scientists to an organization
of volunteers, members and staff committed to conserving our region's natural,
cultural and community resources. We are addressing conservation from these
many angles, understanding that all these pieces must come together if our
region is to grow in exciting ways. WPC is working to preserve what makes
our state so special while advancing ideas for a bold future where economic
prosperity and environmental health form a prosperous partnership.
Protecting rural livelihoods and land uses like forestry and agriculture is
a focus of our organization as we move forward. We are building ties with
private landowners and community leaders who share our vision of "working
landscapes." These are the open fields, farms and forestlands -- that
if protected -- can anchor our region's conservation heritage even deeper.
Local communities who seek to beautify their neighborhoods or clean up a polluted
stream are teaming up with WPC's talented staff in towns and cities across
western Pennsylvania. Together we are making plans, implementing projects
and seeking out other partners and resources to protect our region's special
places into the future.
